Fix: Skyrim Failed to Initialize Renderer

Fix: Skyrim Failed to Initialize Renderer

The error “Failed to initialize renderer” when launching Skyrim usually occurs when the game is unable to display in the selected resolution. This may be because either the graphics drivers of your hardware are not updated/ are corrupt or because the game files are somewhat corrupt.

Rendering is a computing process of generating a photorealistic image (2D or 3D). The displaying of such a model can be called render. Whenever you launch the game, the game checks your video card details and sees if it is capable of supporting these processes. According to the information it gets, it decides which things to initialize and which to exclude. This error occurs when the game is unable to read the video card properly and hence displays this error.

Don’t worry, there are several simple workarounds to solve this problem. Take a look at ones listed below and see if any of them work for you.

Solution 1: Power Cycling your computer

Before we jump to making technical changes to the game or your graphics hardware, it is always wise to completely power cycle your computer and see if this fixes the problem.

Power cycling is an act of turning off a computer completely off and then on again. Reasons for power cycling include having an electronic device reinitialize its set of configurations parameters or recover from an unresponsive state or module. It is also used to reset all the network configurations as they are all lost when you turn the laptop completely off.

To power-cycle your laptop shut it down properly and remove all the wires from it. Next remove the battery properly and detach it. Press the Power button for 1 minute. No,w wait for around 2-3 minutes before plugging the battery back in. The reason for taking out the battery is make sure that all the capacitors are discharged correctly and all the current data stored in RAM is lost. After turning the laptop back on, check if the problem got solved.

In case of a PC, shut it down completely, disconnect all modules and take out the main power cable. Now after waiting for the required time, plug everything back in and check if this solved the problem.

Solution 2: Updating your mods and installing latest patches

If you are using several mods to change the gameplay or add some features, it is advised that you disable these mods and try launching the game again properly. Mods change the core files of the game and tweak the behavior. If there is some mod which is clashing with the settings, it is best to remove that mod and try launching the game again.

If you are not using any mods, you should head over to the official page and download any patches if made available. Developers always release bug fixes and improvements immediately if something bad hits the game enterprise. Install the latest patches and try running the game again.

Solution 3: Launching in Windowed mode

A simple fix which works for a majority of the people is launching the game in Windowed mode. It is possible that the resolution you are trying to launch Skyrim in is not supported or the game is unable to scale itself up to that size.

  1. Open the Skyrim launcher and click on “Options” present at the main screen.

  1. Here check the box “Windowed Mode” present at the bottom left side of the screen.

You can also try tweaking the resolution and see if that makes any difference.

  1. Now press Apply and the game should automatically apply all the changes. Now launch the game and check if the problem got solved.

Tip: Users suggested that turning windowed mode on and off also tended to solve the problem.

Solution 4: Deleting Game Files

Before we move on to reinstalling the device drivers, we will try deleting some game preferences and then try launching the game. When the game detects that there are no preferences present, it will automatically create new default ones to launch the game with.

  1. Close the game completely. Now navigate to the directory where Steam is installed and remove the folder “appcache”. Steam will automatically create this the next time it starts up.
  2. Now go to the directory of Skyrim. The default location is:

  1. Now delete the following two files:

  1. Shut down your computer completely. After it has been shut down for a couple of minutes, turn it back on and check if you can launch the game without any problems.

Solution 5: Updating Graphics Drivers

If all the above methods fail, it probably means that there is a problem with the current drivers installed on your computer. If you have corrupt or outdated drivers, it may be the reason why Skyrim fails to initialize its modules. Now there are two ways through which you can update the drivers: either manually or automatically. In manually, you have to personally download the driver after searching for it at the manufacturer’s website.

Before updating drivers, we will check if installing the default drivers solve the problem for us.

  1. Boot into Safe mode. Type “devmgmt.msc” in the dialogue box and press Enter. Here navigate to Display Adapters, right-click on your adapter and select Uninstall Device.

  1. Boot your computer into normal mode, press Windows + R, type “msc” in the dialogue box and press Enter. Most probably the default drivers will be installed. If not, right-click on any empty space and select “Scan for hardware changes”. Now check if Skyrim works. If it does without any problems, good for you. If it doesn’t, carry on.
  2. Now there are two options. Either you can search online for the latest driver available for your hardware from the manufacturer’s website such as NVIDIA etc. (and install manually) or you can let Windows install the latest version itself (search for updates automatically).
  3. We will take a look on installing manually. Right-click on your hardware and select “Update driver”. Select the first option “Search automatically for updated driver software”. Choose the second option if you are updating manually and select “Browse for driver” and navigate to the location where you downloaded.

  1. Restart your computer after installing the drivers, launch Skyrim and check if this solves the problem.

Видеокарта

Всё еще возникает ошибка failed to initialize renderer в Skyrim?

Method 4: Checking your Game’s Master Files

It is possible that your game can’t update your graphics settings, causing the Failed to Initialize Renderer issue. Perhaps, your game files are set to ‘Read Only’. To fix this problem, you need to validate your master files. Here are the steps:

  1. Exit the game and Steam.
  2. Go to the Steam folder, then delete the appcache folder. Do not worry about messing up your game because Steam will automatically create a new folder later on.
  3. Go to the folder of the game in question.
  4. Look for the XXX.ini and XXXPrefs.ini files and remove them. For instance, if the game you’re repairing is Skyrim, you need to get rid of the Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini files.
  5. Turn off your PC, then switch it on again. Remember that you shouldn’t directly restart your computer. A complete shutdown will do the trick.
  6. Launch the game and see if the error is gone.

5 Ways to Fix Skyrim Failed to Initialize Renderer Error in Windows 10, 8 and 7

Therefore, the above error occurs when the game is unable to read the video card for some reason. So here we discuss five ways, which you may deploy, to eradicate the issue and help smoothen your gameplay experience.

Method #1 Update Graphic Drivers

For most of the problems, the methods listed above should be able to eradicate the issue, but if the error still seems to dictate, there might be an issue with the current drivers installed in your PC.

The reason Skyrim fails to initialize its modules may be due to the outdated drivers, which means that to overcome the error in the game, you need to update your drivers, manually or automatically. However, before updating the drivers, we need to check if the default drivers solve the Skyrim Failed to Initialize Renderer problem for us. To verify that-

Step 1: Boot into safe mode. In the dialogue box, type “devmgmt.msc” and enter. Find the Display Adapters, then right-click on the adapter to select the ‘Uninstall device‘.

Step 2: Boot computer into normal mode, press ‘Windows‘ with ‘R‘ and type msc in the search box and press enter. The default drivers should be installed. However, if they are not fixed, right-click on empty space. Then click ‘Scan for Hardware Changes’. Lastly, check if Skyrim works. Continue the following steps if it does not.

Step 3: Now, the only remaining option is to download and update the drivers either manually or automatically.

Step 4: To update the drivers manually, right-click on the software and select ‘Update Driver’. Choose the second option and select ‘Browse for Driver’ and find the location of the download.

Step 5: Install the drivers and then restart your PC. It should solve the Skyrim Failed to Initialize Renderer problem.

Method #2 Power Cycle Computer

There may indeed be several reasons for failing to initialise the renderer. Still, instead of turning to any other probable cause and making technical alterations to the game or the graphics hardware, a better option is to completely power cycle your computer first. This helps the computer to reinitialize its set of configuration parameters or recover from an unresponsive state, such as in a crash or hang situation.

For this reason, power cycling is among the first steps for troubleshooting an issue. To power cycle, the laptop/PC shut it down appositely and make sure there are no wires attached. In case of a laptop, remove the battery carefully; then press the power button for one minute.

Now, the capacitors are discharged, and the data in the RAM is astray. After a couple of minutes, attach the battery back in. Now turn the computer back on, and check if the problem has been resolved. Although power cycling is a standard diagnostic procedure, performed when the computer freezes, it should not be frequently used for its repeated use may cause thermal stress.

Method #3 Update Mods and Installing the Latest Patches

Mod is an alteration by players of a video game, that changes the game’s aspects such as its looks and behaviour. These mods vary from tiny changes in details to completely remodel the game which helps extend one’s interest in it but using several mods is not recommended.

Mods change the core files of the game and may clash with the settings as well which may cause errors. In addition to this, any software, including video games, may have bugs. A patch is a set of changes to a computer program to update, fix or improve it and also remove bugs, improving its functionality.

It is quite expedient to download patches from the official website whenever made available. Henceforth, installing the latest patches may help remove the Skyrim Failed to Initialize Renderer error.

Method #4 Launch in Windowed Mode

Windowed mode for a software application is a mode in which the program appears in a smaller window rather than on the device’s full screen. It has been observed that for a majority of people, simply launching the game in window mode seems to solve the Skyrim Failed to Initialize Renderer problem.

Since it is plausible that Skyrim does not support the resolution that you are trying to launch it in, for its inability to scale itself up to that size. To change to windowed mode:

Step 1: Open the Skyrim launcher and click on the options on the main screen.

Step 2: Check the box titled ‘Windowed mode‘ at the bottom left side of the screen.

Step 3: Press ‘apply‘, and the game automatically applies the changes.

Now launch the game to see if the Skyrim Failed to Initialize Renderer issue has been resolved. Also try turning the windowed mode on and off, as this seems to solve the problem with several users.

Method #5 Delete Game Files

Another way to eliminate the “Failed to Initialize Renderer” error, is by deleting some game preferences and then launching the game. The game checks for preferences when launching. If it detects no preferences present, it creates new default ones to launch the game with. To delete game preferences-

Step 1: Close the game and find the directory of the installed stream. Remove the folder named “appcache“. The steam then preprogrammed in itself to create this the next time it starts.

Step 2: Now navigate to the directory of Skyrim.

Step 3: Delete the files named Skirim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini.

Step 4: Now shut down the computer and after some time turn it back on and check if the game launched without any trouble or errors.

«Failed to initialize renderer. Unknown error creating the Gamebyro Renderer.» New Vegas won’t launch, and this error comes up.

This started happening randomly after plenty of time of it working fine and no discernible changes have occurred since then. My basic specs are listed below. Any help would be appreciated. So far I have done Google searches and tried several fixes:

– Running the game as administrator
– Disabling all my mods, NVSE, and my ENB
– Resetting my resolution
– Restarting my PC
– Restarting Steam
– Updating my graphics drivers
– Ensuring Windows is updated
– Reinstalling .NET Framework
– Ensuring «Fallout.ini» and «FalloutPrefs.ini» aren’t read-only
– Disabling and re-enabling my graphics drivers
– Reinstalling Microsoft C++
– Verifying integrity of files
– Redownloading the entire game

My (basic) specs:
– Windows 10 Pro 64bit
– AMD Radeon R7 200
– AMD A4-^320 APU

It happened with me too, just a few days ago been unable to get the game working since.

Never had this sort of issue before but I did some searching and this came up:

I dont know if it works but if your getting desperate for fixes you may want to try this.

Another possible fix I found is going to SteamsteamappscommonFallout New Vegas
edists and clicking on the vcredistx86.exe which should give you the option to either uninstall Microsoft C++ or repair it.

If that fails you could try Verifying the integrity of your game files or reinstalling your game as a whole.

Okay, what worked for me is running it in windowed mode. So my advice to anyone else having this problem is try running it in windowed mode.

– Set it to windowed mode in the launcher
– Open Fallout.prefs (located in Documents/MyGames/FalloutNV)
– Look for «iSize W» and «iSize H», and set them to your screen’s resolution

Until this solution magically fixes itself, that’s the best we’ll be able to get.

EDIT: Not an ideal solution. My game freezes and really struggles in every single loading screen, though it has managed to actually complete three loading screens despite this, stuck on the fourth one. Definitely a very temporary short-term fix.

I had this problem recently. Exact same error message. A windows 10 update disabled nvidia dsr which allowed me to go above my native monitor resolution for the game. Has windows 10 updated for you recently and are you using a similar thing for your amd card? it’s definitely a resolution issue. The game can’t load into the resolution you have selected. for me i just unchecked all the higher resolutions in my gpu control panel, pressed apply and then check the boxes again and pressed apply. Works now. See if the game launcher has a show all resolutions box. If so, uncheck it and try some of the resolutions there.

Don’t know if that helps. Took me a while to fix this one

Yes, Windows 10 updated recently and yes – originally, I did use something similar(AMD’s «Virtual Super Resolution» feature – since I had to use an RGB cord rather than HDMI, I couldn’t use 1080p despite having an HD monitor), but I managed to get HDMI working (a day or two ago) so now I no longer have to use the feature and I turned it off.

Despite that, and despite setting the game to my native resolution (1920×1080), it still crashes. It’s definitely a resolution issue, but the game has no reason to be unable to handle the resolution I have set it to.

Failed to Initialize Renderer is graphic cards driver and redistributions issue.
but if had a hardware change, then dirextX or from MS page can things odd bug. ( and you dont even say error codes, if it even saying a code nr. ?
rerun redist folder and directX then reboot.
?:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonFallout New VegasRedists

and you have done almost everything, whatever cause this is quite odd. ( and you did say you change nothing, it could be a windows update or something you dont think on a graphic driver update that cause this.

could you start the game as default before modded or change anything in the game. ?

then you could try steam cloud off first at the game , rename steam newvegs to folder to .old same with save game folder, then reinstall game with original to test if this is a modded game issue also, ( i have always could start the game, i only fix in-crash issue with nvac and YuP , never could get 4gb patch to work, but it dont matter then game is working.

another tip try install path of exile that game actual told me ones then i had a issue same as you have now no graphic card is there, then i knew primary graphic card in system is set to wrong one. ( problem is so many games today can bypass what OS see as default and start game if card is selected and this game has graphic card in the launcher i bet it cant be that, you do sounds like you know what you are doing after all this test , but we can all make mistakes
and that why i mention path of exile as test, that game want it as system default then i also got your bug with games that dont work as it should, that how i learn that windows update has change my primary graphic card to CPU. no wonder why games was laggy, problem is the fastest CPU today can actual run alot of games so you dont even know you have a problem untill you play a real 3D games that require all and cpu cant keep up..

Then check AMD controll panel that card is selected there, and other thread has mention disable and re-enable graphic card in windows OS as solutions, we all know that is not a solution but clearly says something has been change sense OS cant figureout or has got buggy somehow to this game.( after update or change, or graphic card driver update )

even talgaby that has been here so long also scream at this is very strange odd bug that has happen to so many. just a thanks to talgaby for trying to help others in so long a time in this game.

another test idea make a another windows account, so you can figureout if this is profile related.

this will skip all current setting, and see this issue with fresh eyes ( sort-off a clean windows from your previous profile.) only use this as last test, it can show if pc system is screw up by addware or or other app that has change system core files.

This is a split board – You can return to the Split List for other boards.

I am trying to play Fallout: New Vegas using Mod Organizer. Last time I played using Mod Organizer everything was working fine. But now, when I try to play using Mod Organizer I get a message telling me this,

«Failed to initialize renderer. Your display doesn’t support the selected resolution. Please set a different resolution in Fallout: New Vegas’s Launcher under ‘Display Settings’.» But when I play vanilla version through steam, it works. What’s the problem? I’ve already checked my graphics card and it is up to date.

I had the same problem with skyrim.

I don’t know what the root cause was, but I found out that every time I messed with my mods (load order, add or remove mods, etc), then I had to launch the game once from the launcher and reconfigure the settings.

For some reason, the launcher kept changing my display adapter to something other than my graphics card. Perhaps it had to do with the relevant script extender or an ENB, but I never found out.

Method #6: Clear Cache

A cache is stored data that help your computer to open your programs and games faster.

Skyrim also has some cache settings, and if you have installed the game through Steam, you will have two different cache data.

One last workaround to fix this issue is to remove that cache and launch the game refreshed. You can do that following these steps:

  1. Go to your desktop and right-click on the Steam shortcut, then click on Open file location
  2. The file explorer will open and there right-click on the folder appcache , then click on Delete to remove this cache
  3. Now, in the file explorer navigate to your Documents and then open the folder My Games
  4. Finally, in the folder Skyrim, find and remove the files Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini
  5. Once done, restart your computer
  6. Then, launch Skyrim, and hopefully, it will start without problems, and you can continue enjoying this fun game

I hope this little tutorial helps you to fix this rendered initialization issue on Skyrim and let you play the game for hours. Remember that you can contact using the comment section if you have some questions or need more assistance.

Here, you have some other Skyrim related articles that could help you:

Rendering or image synthesis is the automatic process of generating a photorealistic or non-photorealistic image from a 2D or 3D by means of computer programs, and the result of the displaying such a model can be called a render.

When launching the game, the game engine would check your video card details, and see what it is capable of supporting. After that, the game engine decides what things to initialize for it. If it fails, it means that the game can not read your video card properly. So it’s probably due to the graphics card driver problem.

Solution 1: Restart your computer

As many technical issues can be resolved by restarting the computer, it’s no harm to restart your computer and fix the Failed to initialize renderer error..

1) Close your game that was giving the error.

2) Shut down your computer.

3) Turn on your computer after a while.

4) Restart your game to see if the error disappears.

No luck? Don’t worry. We have other solutions for you to try.

Solution 2: Install the latest patches

The game developers always release the latest updates to fix some bugs, so you should check whether is any update of the game, and download the latest patches to fix the bugs.

After updating your game to the latest version, restart your computer and launch it again.

Solution 3: Update the graphics card driver

As mentioned above, Failed to initialize renderer can be caused by the graphics card driver issue, as the graphics card driver is quite important for inter-communicating between the video card and the games and programs. So if the graphics card driver is missing or outdated, you’ll receive this error message. Updating the graphics card driver can effectively solve the issue.

There are two ways to update the graphics card driver:

Manually update graphics card driver

You can also go to the manufacturer website of your graphics card, and find the correct driver that matches with your Windows OS and processor type, then install it in your computer, which requires the time ans computer skills.

Automatically update the graphics card driver

If you don’t have time or patience to manually update graphic card in your computer, you can do that automatically with Driver Easy.

Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the correct drivers for it. You don’t need to know exactly what system your computer is running, you don’t need to risk downloading and installing the wrong driver, and you don’t need to worry about making a mistake when installing.

You can update your drivers automatically with either the FREE or the Pro version of Driver Easy. But with the Pro version it takes just 2 clicks (and you get full support and a 30-day money back guarantee):

1) Download and install Driver Easy.

2) Run Driver Easy and click the Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.

3) Click the Update button next to a flagged graphics card driver to automatically download and install the correct version of this driver (you can do this with the FREE version).

Or click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system (this requires the Pro version – you’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All).

4) Restart your computer and check to see if you can play the game now.

Solutions 4: Validating master files for your game

It’s likely that your graphics settings are high, or your files are set as read only, so it prevents your game from updating your graphics settings. You can try validating master files for your game to fix it.

1) Close the game and Steam, then g o to Steam folder and remove folder named appcache . Steam will create a new folder later later when you open it, please don’t worry.

2) Go to the folder of the game that gives the error. It’s normally in C drive > Users> Your Name > Documents > My games, or in Documents > My games, then click the file that is named with the game. For example, if it’s Skyrim that gives the error of Failed to initialize renderer, you can open the file named Skyrim in Document > My games > Skyrim.

3) Delete the .ini files named with XXX.ini and XXXPrefs.ini. Take Skyrim as an example, you can delete the files named Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini.

4) Shut down your computer and start your computer. Kindly note that please do not directly restart your computer. shutting down the PC can help reset all hooks, while restarting the computer doesn’t help with that.

5) Open the game that gives the error again to see if it works.

Here’re the best solutions to fix Failed to initialize renderer. If you have any questions, please feel free to comment below and we’ll see what more we can do to help.
